MF231
When I try to start the tractor and turn the key, it just clicks like a battery Is dead. I repeat this four or five times typically and then the starter engages, turns over fine and starts. I have replaced the ignition switch with no change in results. Any idea of what is causing problem?

Sounds like the starter solenoid is sticking, or a bad connection. To test for a bad connection, you could try turning the key and holding it in start. Look for signs of a connection getting hot, but be careful they can get really hot. If there`s no heat it could be the switch, but I`d be having a look at the solenoid.

Denchen's solution sounds reasonable. I suggest cleaning the battery terminals and the connectors attached to them. Tighten them back securely. Track the ground wire to where it attaches to the frame. Clean and tighten there as well. Be sure the battery is up to full charge. You could even have the battery load tested to be sure it can reliably do the job.

After having a think, you show you`ve a MF 231, I think this has a P3152 engine. Perkins 3 cylinder 152 cu inch. Many of these engines were fitted with a Lucas pre engage starter. If yours is this starter, then sometimes they can be serviced with a few basic tools. Sometimes the solenoid on the top of the starter would burn out, but as yours is clicking, it sounds as the piston is sliding. Attached to the piston is a ring that pushes onto two contacts that send power to the starter motor. These contacts sometimes burn, and sometimes just get dirty. You could just buy a new replacement cap with new contacts. Depending on use, it could be the carbon brushes on the actual starter motor, again these are serviceable. It can be done but you need a big soldering iron. The bottom line is, before you go spending serious money on a new starter, they are pretty easy to repair if you are fairly confident. I think the first thing I would do is connect a volt meter to the small contact on the solenoid, and check when you turn the key to start it shows 12v. If it does, connect the meter to the large wire going from the solenoid to the starter, turn the key and check power is going there. Make sure the battery is good and the connections clean.
Good luck.

Hey Berclair ! 1st welcome to TBN , I would go with both replies from Roadworthy & denchen but do it that order 1st Roadworthy reply & it's easiest to do & 2nd denchen reply could be the alternative! But IMHO I would go with Roadworthy reply & again IMHO it sounds like your battery is discharging do to a bad ground ( negative ) & it could be a simple loose positive wire & check + where it connects directly to the starter it should be tight & not loose! if it is loose tighten the lower nut closest to the starter housing 1st & when that tight ( DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN ) then hold the lower nut in place then tighten the upper nut above the + cable while holding the lower nut in place, You will need 2 wrenches to do this & this is only if this connection is loose at the starter.Again follow both - &+ leads connections.
