Huh? I must ave missed something.

I think he's suggesting a drip hose in the crawl space for pesticides, installed now while it's easier to get access to the area.

I got in the crawl space after the floor was put on; it's really not bad. Still need to bend over some but I can walk around just bending over. When the time comes I'll set off a few "bug bombs" down there to take care of any unwanted bugs. :thumbsup:

They should be standing up all the walls today. I'll be sure to get some pictures.

Side note;

Selling the last of my hay today. I produced about 55 tons and it's all gone as of today. Next year if I want/need I will be able to nearly double that amount.

Question;

Is the price of fiberglass exterior doors outrageous, or am I just out of touch with reality? Looking about 3500 bucks for just 2 doors!

No, they are indeed outrageous. We bought a new front door for our remodel, one with a large oval window, and I just about choked on the price. Plus, we put two exterior doors on the sunroom; one to the driveway for us, and one to the back yard to let out the dogs. New doors are stupid expensive these days.

Congrats on your hay situation, too.

Anything that isn't on the shelf at the box stores will have a significant increase in price due to the fact that not as many are sold.

Why fiberglass? In my opinion, and from what I've been told by quite a few clients, they look like plastic.

Doors all have the same insulation and R value. They are all pretty much the same at how much air they stop from getting into a house and there is no advantage spending more for a door if your goal is to save on energy usage. I put a massive doggy door in my back door and my bill didn't change at all. You can't get do more than that to a door to decrease it's energy efficiency then that!!!!

If you want to improve the energy efficiency of a door, you have to add a storm door to it. Air movement is the enemy of all doors, and where you lose energy. Same with windows and walls. It's not the amount of insulation int he walls that matters nearly as much as how well you keep the air from getting into your house from the outside. Ceilings are totally different and that's where the maximum amount of R value makes the most difference.

If it's just because you like the look of the door, then that's where they get you. Costs the same to make an ugly door as a pretty one, but they get to mark up the cost a lot more for a pretty one.

I had steel/wood core doors on my last home and whenever they got wet they swelled. I had to plane off the bottom/sides a couple times. Plus they rusted. I would like a maintenance free door if that's even possible. :laughing:

I did add storm doors to a couple of them.

We had a break in a few years ago. They damaged the door and shattered the jamb. Since I worked during the day, I told her I could replace the door this weekend, only 2 days away. I screwed the door shut and screwed 3 2x4's across the door. I went to work the next day. She calls and says she doesn't feel safe and a carpenter was on his way to replace it. She ordered a door at Lowes and the had carpenter pick it up on his way. When I got home I saw a very nice fiberglass door with oval glass in the center. The 36" pre-hung door was only about $600. We've had it 6 or 7 years. Not a single issue with it. The porch roof protects it from rain and snow. It does sort of have a plastic look, I guess. But I'd install another one if needed.

We just went through ordering new doors for our house. The door salespeople tell me that the door companies won't warranty doors with wood exteriors that get sun. Our south facing door gets sun in the winter (and it's the most degraded of the existing wood doors) so for that one we went with a solid wood door that's got a fiberglass 'cap' on the outside. Apparently the wood grain 'stain' they put on fibreglass looks fake so we'll paint that one.

$3500 for two doors sounds high end. The nice Simpson all wood front doors are about 1500. Rogue Valley is about half to 2/3 that and looks as well made to our inexpert eyes.

Our builder is getting some firm prices for us, hopefully he has some clout to get the price down some.

As promised here is the progress.

My expensive door is the solid oak one with sidelights. Have one fiberglas one to look like oak, was probably double a steel door, but looks nice.
