No it sure doesn't look like there is any break in the weather for me even to start my garden. I am jealous of all the southern states that will be eating veggies fromthe garden by the time that I get mine in.

I hear you, I use this time to fix/repair any winter damage. I also replaced my fencing with rabbit guard on the bottom, 3' + 3+ of 2x2 square on top, and ran my electric fence above that to give me 7' to keep the deer from being fed.
I also just got an order of hops in and had to make some raised beds and trellis to hold them.
only thing left to do is replant the blueberry bushes and get ready to start some seeds (mid april)

They were not sure if we were going to get hit with that. I was running around like crazy last night trying to finish putting mulch over the hop beds.

Weather starting to get warmer here. Still alot of rain. Wanted to post some updates of the growth so far.
Some onions and radishes in front planter.

Ray, my Italian tomatoes are up about 3" and I'm moving them from my utility room to outside today. I'll thin them down to two plants per pot (6 pots) and then down to one in a couple of weeks.
I couldn't believe how quickly those seeds you sent to me came up. It was less than a week and they were popping out of the soil. They sure seem to be healthy. I'll try to get a couple of pictures later today.

Your beds look terrific. I can almost taste those onions and radishes. From what I've seen, once radishes pop up, it's not long until you'll be having radishes for dinner.

Corn is up. Garden needs to be hoed, but will be tilled again for more planting this weekend.

Lettuce, radishes, beets, onions, shallots, Swiss chard, collards, carrots and turnips planted 3/24. All up and doing fine. New blog entry today.

Lost a couple sweet corn plants to Tues. night's frost. Most survived alright. Set out Tomatoes and Peppers. Cukes and Squash are up. The Cukes are along the fence-line, and I hope to train them to run up the fence for easy pickings. Butter Beans, Peas, Okra, Watermelons, and another row of Corn went in over the weekend.
I also spread the Dry Molasses over the Top half of the Garden Friday night. Ants went to the Lower half. It will be spread tomorrow.
Didn't get to mess with the garden anymore Friday, as I spent all day Saturday mowing, weed-eating, pulling up a small live oak with the tractor I was tired of mowing around, raking several truckloads of live oak leaves, washing/servicing equipment, sharpening the mower blades, etc. If they weren't so nice to sit under, they would have gotten to meet the business-end of the Stihl yesterday.
Today I disced all the strips I had plowed in the Dove Field for sunflowers. Might get to plant tomorrow if I can find some Treflan or Prowl somewhere. I have Lightning left over from last year's Clearfield crop, but can't find Clearfield seed locally. Looks like I'll be going back to Black Oil or Peredovics.
I ran 5 gals of fuel out of the tractor - $20.50 worth!!

I train mine up some of those 'fence panels' the kind with like a 4x4 or 4x6 inch holes. Works really well, you do have to go out almost daily to weave the leaders up the fence before they become a tangled mess. I also plant 60 cuke plants so maybe not so often if you have less to get tangled. You get lots of nice, straight, evenly green, clean cukes though!

60 Cukes! I could see how that would be a daily exercise. The fence around my garden is 4x4 welded wire. It sounds like it will work!

The onions are up, but they are from last year, but very tasty.
Just put in 1/2 row out of 6 of lettuce and carrots. I think it is the earliest i have ever started.
Any weeds went to the laying hens for their enjoyment.
Tons of worms in the raised beds.

What is everyone using for keeping the varmints out? My garden is smallish, but still didn't make me feel good to come out and have everything eaten one morning. I saw some metal fencing around one garden today about 4ft tall that looked good- wouldn't keep the deer out but I don't think that's my main concern at this point.

We have a "temporary" fence that with 5' and 8' TPosts, 4' tall square fence and HT wire. The garden is roughly 50'x25'.
The tall fence posts are in the the corners with two more spaced along the 50' sides of the garden. The smaller posts are in between to hold up the 4' fence. We have two strands of HT wire above the 4' fence held up by the taller T posts. The highest wire is about 6' up. One side of the garden has two chain link gates I had on hand. They are "attached" to two tall T posts that act as the gate posts. I took the pipe posts that would have been used to hold the gates and put them over the tposts. The gates then just attach as normal to the pipes.
Its complicated to read but not do.
The fence is 6 feet tall which I have been told is not tall enogh to keep out the deer. Last year I put up the fence and we had no problems with the deer. I suppose they have other things to eat now so they dont go after the garden.
I they do ever jump over the fence I'll just get some taller Tposts and string another HT wire up there.
Once we finish landscaping and expanding the garden we will put up a more permanent fence.

I put in three strands of electric wire --- one at 3" for the squirrels, one at 6" for the rabbits and one at 30" for the deer. Used a solar powered rechargeable energizer, so I didn't have to string 110VAC or remember to replace the batteries.

Thanks for the responses. Electric is a great idea. I've got t-posts installed and will be picking up some fencing tomorrow.

How is the growing season going for everyone? Its rained here 14 of the last 20 days. Was able to get some corn in the ground on the 5th. Its starting to come up. Been eating alot of onions, radishes and lettuce. The plants I have in the greenhouse are getting pretty big and need to get in the ground.

Ray, I'm just waiting for the right time to post a picture of my garden spot. The entire thing is overgrown with basketflowers. When they bloom, it should look beautiful.
My tomato seeds germinated and popped up in no time at all. After that, they seem to be stunted in growth. I just can't get them going. The seeds were planted in potting soil and this last weekend we put them into bigger pots and outside in partial sun. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but the plants might not survive. I'm a bit baffled.
Your stuff looks great. I can just taste those radishes. We are still eating out of our freezer from last year, but that fresh stuff is hard to beat.
