I would recommend opening up the solenoid and check it out. It is not a difficult task.

Thanks Bob, erj & all replies,

I removed solenoid from starter and disassembled & found not too much wear on the copper but a hard black film all over the contacts
Resurfaced the copper studs & turned the circle disc over on the shaft & put back together
Removing & putting back the little lock rings on the shaft, & de-soldering the contacts to remove then routing the wire back thru to re-solder was the most frustrating, but it was not too bad
Starts fine now
