Starter on Ford 851

The starter is just spinning on this Ford 851 Powermaster. It is not turning the engine over. I dont know what to check. I can pull it if I need to, but is the something I should check before removing it. It is turning but not engaging to the flywheel. Not like a car starter so I'm kinda lost here. Help!!!!

I believe the bendix has to kick the starter out to engage the flywheel. If this does not take place the starter will just spin because your gear does not engage the fly wheel and thus not turning the engine over. Sounds like you need to take your starter to the repair shop. Should be a relative cheap fix.

I would put the tractor in gear and rock it, often they will get a bad spot on the starter ring gear and not turn over. My 8N has more bad spots than good. If that does not work then see about pulling the starter and make sure that the starter drive is in good shape.

Try above first. If rocking in high gear doesn't work, then try tapping on the starter with a plastic hammer or something similar. Don't pound too hard, or you'll damage the starter. Of course, make sure the battery is fully charged.

If none of the above works, pull the oil filter then the starter. It isn't really a big deal. Inspect the bendix and ring gear for wear. The bendix may benift from a little wd-40.

Sometimes a new Bendix gear will add a bunch more starts to the life of a worn ring gear. Did that with an older BMW 535 and it went two years without that sickening free-spinning.
