At the Bowie property where we built the water tower, we had an old "Farm All", full size with a 4 cylinder engine. Didn't have one of those fancy flappers that closed the straight up exhaust pipe off. So we kept a tin can on the pipe. That old guy had to be hand cranked, almost every time it started it would back fire. Some times a little pop, others a big pop. We would take bets on how high the can would fly. Now and then almost 20' straight up. Someone that shall remain name less to protect the guilty, decided to put a fist size rock on the can and see how high it would go. Need I tell you that it did not go straight up. Being as how we learn fast, only did that one time.:D

My Grandpa kept tin cans on his 2 cylinder JD tractors. I pretty sure when one of us kids wasn't around he would take the can off before starting them. But he would "forget to" for us. Yea, they would go pretty high.
