I never get tired of watching these spaceX flights. Interesting how they release the satellites like a pez dispenser.
Yup, and this time the Pez dispenser worked properly. Last test some of the satellites hit the opening on the way out and didn't exit on the correct trajectory.

In between Starship launches a bit of SpaceX news.

SpaceX is now providing precise positional awareness of objects in Earth orbit to All satellite operators for free.

This will greatly reduce the probability of collisions that could create orbital debris (space junk) hazards.

Big change in Starship Mars mission priority.

It is Moon base first.

Everything I've read about people staying on mars., moon might be smarter.
Yes, Logic wise, and any kind of emergency crops up -it just makes sense to perfect much of the equipment and tech closer to the earth.
A few days on the Moon, a round trip at least there is a small chance for astronauts to be saved.

Mars things go wrong pretty much a death sentence. This change seems to be a Very good decision.

Be interesting to see multiple moon base locations eventually. South pole has Helium-3 and water ice, maybe next a backside base.

Have to wonder if China's moon ambitions have the US government urging SpaceX to concentrate on the moon first.

Going to Mars is a one way trip. Nobody is ever coming back. But maybe that will change as technology improves with building a base on the Moon.
I agree that Mars is a one way trip at best.

I do doubt whether a moon base alters anything. The data on the radiation damage from just getting to Mars would require either enormous weights of shielding, or genetically modified humans to have significantly improved genetic DNA repair systems. Then of course, you have to deal with the martian environment.

Never say never, and all that, but I don't see even a one way trip in my lifetime. I also have my doubts about what are being proposed as technology for moon bases. Everyone seems to implicitly assume that nothing will need repair or wear out and that Apollo 13 events won't happen, nor will there be any issues duct taping the water generator or power. I've had to repair and macguyver things in remote areas where little to nothing existed, but most weren't life critical, unlike a moon base. I liked the "Martian" film, but there were more than a few shall we say "magic" events. In real life, I think stringing together too many improbable events is usually lethal.

All the best,

Peter

In my mind, I see a base on the moon becoming a place to mine, manufacture and build rockets, or space craft that will be able to get to Mars a lot easier than from earth.

Once the first Dollar Store opens up there, we know it's all gonna happen!!!!!

🤣

Let's just say while past performance is no guarantee of future performance, I look at astronauts nearly drowning in their spacesuits and a space station that has had an air leak for years as prognosticators for future issues, if not performance.

I did read a former astronaut's opinion on the proposed mars suits as being worse than running a marathon per hour of suit time. Click bait? Maybe, but looking at the weight, even adjusted for lunar and Martian gravities, I tend to think they might be right.

All the best, Peter
