Starlink

I placed the residential order. It was an interesting process. My CC card had expired since I put down the deposit and I wanted to have the dish shipped to a different address. When I tried to change the CC card information it didn't want an address, just a "postal code". After "saving" the new card information it didn't change and still had an expiration of 2022. When I tried to place the order it rejected it and said the card didn't work. I got a text from my CC company asking if I tried to make a purchase to which I replied yes. I had to enter the shipping address again since it changed back to my home address. I tried the purchase again and it rejected it again. I logged out and started over and it worked. I got the confirmation for payment and order confirmed.

A rather inauspicious start to the process I would say.

@NoTrespassing I'm glad that your Starlink is in process! Congratulations, I know that it has been a long wait. I look forward to hearing about your installation.

All the best, Peter

I have a question, probably the first of many. Please bear with me, I know nothing when it comes to networking/internet etc. I ordered the ethernet adapter from Starlink for the new dish that's on it's way. I want to use ethernet cable to connect 2 xboxes to Starlink. I plan to run other devices with Wifi for now. Is it advisable to connect Dishy to a TP-Link 5 Port Gigabit Unmanaged Ethernet Network Switch and then to the xboxes?

Correct. A network switch is a device you can use to turn a single ethernet connection (i.e. from the SL ethernet adapter) into multiple connections. They are simple and cheap to use. No real configuration required. Just plug things together.

I managed to permanently install the Starlink dish yesterday. Performance has been up and down. We were getting about 60 down/20 up/50 ms latency at a about 4 pm. 8 pm while gaming it was about 40 down/15 up 50 ms. I checked at 5 am, 194 down/ 20 up/ 23 ms.

The installation was easy and I have no obstructions. We're just running wireless for now. The ethernet adapter shipped so when I gets here I'm going to borrow a cable from work and see if there's an improvement to our Xboxes. Distance from router to Xboxes is about 20 ft with one wall and inside a cabinet, the other unit is about 35 ft. with one wall.

We've been on it for a year. Service is spotty. Downright poor at times during peak use.
No obstructions. 2 cost increases. Wish it was better. Ethernet cable cable helped a bit.

If you are ok with your service, feel free to ignore this.

If you aren't happy with the service, there is a lot of useful information in the debug section of the app. Have you checked the app for the list of outages? Have you checked to see whether you have any packet losses getting to the Starlink router, and whether the Starlink router loses any packets talking to Dishy?

Obstructions matter to contrite of service, but as there are more satellites in service, it will become less of a problem. If your obstructions aren't zero, I would check to see what might be done to help Dishy out.

Our service was initially good, but then got spotty, and it was traced by Starlink support to a bad router/cable/Ethernet adapter. Having replaced them, we have had almost no outages of two seconds or more.

We went to some effort to make sure that everything downstream of the Starlink router is faster than it is, and all of the WiFi access points are faster than the electronics.

Sure, mine slows a little in the evenings, but slow is 40-80Mbits/s, still with 40-80ms pings. That's a big improvement on 3-5MBits/s DSL, so we are happy.

All the best,

Peter
