Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders??

A friend of the families mounted a hamster wheel around his bird feeder

took me a few years to figure this dance all out.......during the winter in order to keep the woodpeckers from making holes in the barn siding I need to feed them.......we get three main types that bother the barn....hairy, downey and red bellied........also get the pileated woodpecker but thankfully they leave the barn alone........the wood peckers like mealworm suet in a cage feeder.........unfortunately so do a host of other birds so I'd go through it no time.........so I needed to put up a seed feeder to keep the other birds happy......but thats the one the squirrels would attack......so to keep them occupied I also sprinkle a 1/2 cup of wildlife mix every morning on the ground about 30 feet away from the feeders........that mix is mostly corn with some sunflower seeds and nuts....the squirrels love it.....as do the cardinals and bluejays.........so everyone gets their own mix and they leave everyone else's alone........a delicate dance that makes everyone happy and keeps the barn from looking like swiss cheese.........of course this is predicated on the weather as I can't do any of this until the bears go into hibernation since they'll just eat anything in sight.......haha.......Jack

The Yankee Flipper works pretty well, and is entertaining to watch, You do have to charge its batteries. It sends em flying.

These actually work. Guess they SHOULD for the price! We had one for many, many years. Then bought another for a gift for my dad. I inherited it when he passed, so we have two now.

Have an older model of this. It was a hand me down from a friend who passed away. We've had it up 5 years or so....have yet to see a squirrel get in it. AND we have loads of squirrels.

When I was in college in the mid-70s, we listened to public radio during the day at work. One year near Christmas they had a weeks-long radio play about an unhappy 400 (or thereabouts) year old wizard who was searching for the secret to happiness. In his travels he met up with Red Barber (early baseball broadcaster). Red told him that he and his neighbors loved feeding the birds, but that squirrels kept eating the seeds. All of Red's neighbors were unhappy because their efforts to thwart the squirrels always failed. Red declared that the secret to happiness was to just put out enough seed for the squirrels, too.

A few years ago my dad had a nasty squirrel in his yard. It actually caught and killed a bird at that feeder. I was there when he finally caught it in the trap. That thing was evil and full of rage. We had to wrap the trap in move it. Believe he took it little ways off shore for a 'swimming lesson'.
