The manual says my gearbox will accept 2 qts of gear oil (I use 90w). I used a suction device to clear out all the old oil until I couldn't get anything to come out. Pickup tube was on bottom of gear box. Removed plug on side to check level of new fluid as I added. All I could get in the gearbox was about 1/2 qt before it started coming out the level hole. The mower was on level ground. Am I missing something? I didn't check the volume of oil I removed but i know it wasn't anywhere near 2 qt.
The gearbox has a volume of 85cu in to the fill hole (approx 1/2 way up the cylinder). Some of this space is taken up by the gears (???) This should allow 1.5 qts if the cylinder had nothing in it but fluid...It accepted less than 16oz. I turned the shaft several times to attempt to circulate the lube and checked it but still shows full and the oil does not appear to be mixed with residual old oil.

Using a suction tube doesn't drain any oil from below the top of the upper downshaft bearing, at best. The entire lower part of the housing is still full of oil. The best way to drain these gearboxes is to invert the entire machine.

Hmmm....my reply went away! Thanks for the info, that explains it. Now to get her turned over without a front end loader and without damaging it.
