Got a lead on a used mower. It is a Bushog brand 5 foot mower. It looks a bit like the Rebel series but is built a bit heavier. It has been stored indoors and not used much even though it is at least 25 years old. I have never used a square back. What is the general opinion on them

Easier to back over trees to cut them off. Also they will dig in easier on turns.

I don't see how it will cUT in easier on turns? The back it higher than the front and the front has skids?

I wouldn't worry what shape it it. The blades on them all cut in a circle.

There probably rounded or angled off in the back to save on material or weight on most would be my guess?

The original SQ series of Bush Hogs are good machines. I had an SQ72 that I bought used and ran for about 10 years. Bought it for $400 and sold it this spring for $375.

I have a square back bush hog. It's a bit if a pain when your mowing along something like a building or a fence and want to turn away from it. Otherwise, it does the job.

The Bush hog "square back" models are actually 3 sided on the rear. The corners are cut off diagonally. Point being, the back of the deck is not rounded. An actual square deck won't cut clean outside corners because the blades are so far away from the rear corner of the deck.

Is that because there is less "lift" or suction developed by the blades, since the inside volume of the deck is much larger (than a rounded or angled deck)?

Nothing wrong with them. Square was the standard shape for many many years.

Round has advantages already mentioned. Better in tight areas and turning along a fence line, better suction, less weight hanging far back, etc. But they both work as intended
