got a lil more done.

got hood sanded, and hood, nose, side panels and gas tank primed, as well as a lil metal resto work on the air cleaner, and some prime for it too , after a good dip and cleaning..

adjusted steering.

pressure washed and degreased chassis.

pushed her back away from the garage so I can get her cribbed on timbers and pull wheels off and then see about a lil color next week.

There was a ba-jillion of those things around here "back in the day". (OUTSTANDING Case dealer just up the road a piece) You like NF tractors, you picked the right brand. Case built a bundle of 'em. You'll need an LA and an 800 to go along with the VAC, maybe a 1570 would look good next to it too!

I think I know where 2 are in a barn now that we are talking about it.. :)

LA won't be a narrow front tractor...Big "standard" wheatland tractor for the most part. 1570 is a GIANT of a mid 70's tractor. Not a NF ride either, but the big hoss of the 2wd's before Case & IH became one.

800's were hugely popular in this area. I bet there's a dozen or so still "on the farm" within 10 miles of here.

here's the update for today.

got the rear rims painted, tires cleaned and polished up and she's off the jack stands now.

dinked for a couple hours mounting up an alternator to her.

sheesh.. what a rig! i used the oem lower bracket, flipped over.. :) with a 2.5" metal tab extended off one leg.. drileld a couple holes in it to allign things differently as tests.... mounted alt kinda upside down if you will. the fixed pivot area that is large is actually at the top, and the ear with the threaded hole is at the bottom, with retainer bolt screwed thru a bracket, into the back side of the alt ear. works fine.. looks odd if you notice it.. :) top bracket is off some auto.. usualy bent deal with a slide area for a bolt to silde as you adjust tension. angle was wrong for it and it was 3" too short, and bottom edge was about 1/16" too thick to allow a 3/8 bolt to go thru it and alt ear.. so ground a 16th off the bracket, and then bolted it to yet another tab, that is not bolted to the back side of the water pump, using a piece of 1/2" stock ( square 1" x 1" x 1/2" ) as a spacer... thus bracket hits the back of the mount ear on top... had to do this or bracket hit the fan... :)

removed fan and pulley, added a washer to get the belt as close as possible to true. mounted it all up and had about 1/8" clearance to the sheet metal nose.. and 3/8 to 1/2" clearance from belt to lower rad hose with alt adjsuted.

whew... tight fit!

ran wires to alt and hooke dup to ammeter and ignition switch thru a dash lamp.

put a charge on the bat while I was working... went ahead and mounted the nose as I was constantly putting it on and taking it off to check alt fit.
slowly but surely!

i'd have to check the manual to see if they were optional or not. I'm realitively new to case myself.

todays update:

after i got back from the tractor show this am and had a quick walk and some lunch ( celery and protien shake :) )

went out to beat on the vac for 2.5 hours.. of couse.. after feeding cat and dogs and horses and pigs and cows and chickens...

went ahead and installed battery.. had put it on charge this am to get it topped off.

cranked tractor over and nada.. cleaned points and got her to start on the temp gas tank.. found I had wired ammeter backwards.. :) got oil pressure line bled out and no leaks...

went ahead and loose hung side panels and hood to get an idea of where I was at. hood has had metal work don on it in the past.. though intact.. it don't fit 100% but fits good enough. same with side panels and brackets. everything is a lil kilter.. I bent and scootched it to look pretty good.. without major work it will likely stay that way.. :)

re ran the starter wires and the thermistat.. moved gas tank a bit to get some clearance..

got the rims painted and back on and her setting on the ground.. cleaned up the tires with some vaso....

so far she starts decently, charges well, used a dash idiot lamp setup... and has 15 psi oil pressure at idle..

all i had time for.. am at work now..

I've never seen a VAC without a PTO, and don't remember seeing anything in the manual.

Hi! May be the VAC available without PTO. Less expensive. I would like buy this tractor. It was not for sale. Thank! Oldmech

Keep on truckin' (or, rather, restorin'). Lookin good.

Got my son's 1948 Farmall Cub in my shop yesterday after moving the Bolen's GT 1453 garden tractor out to make room (the 1453 needed a new engine). Got the fan, cowling and radiator removed from the Cub before leaving town (son's 40th birthday today in Sacramento). Engine comes out Monday and heads for the engine shop for a complete rebuild.

got called into work early today.. other person went home sick, and has already called off tomorrow so I get a 12hr double tomorrow.. got a lil work on the vac this am, but it started raining about 10am..

steering wheel wasn't as bad as I thought it was.. sanded it, filled the cracks with epoxy, sanded down again after chores, and got a coat of prime on it. after that sky's got dark.. so put up the tools in the barn, waiting for rain. in the mean time, I cut some flat and angle and punched a few holes in it.. torched on it a bit and waved a welding rod over it some, .. what i came up with was bracket that reached around the back of the alt, used the unused ear on the lower genny bracket, and hooked behind the top bracket onthe same nut. stabilized the alt good and pulled it back a couple degrees and made her track as true as she will likely get.

rain started at that point.. so i went in to clean up and headed out for lunch.. at lunch I got the work call..

worked on a alt stabilizer bracket. oem setup was obviously a gen.. and I had to play with brackets to get a alt wedged in.. wasn't ideal.. so added this for now..

here's the bracket, in the rough. this is with it test fit, no grinding or finish work has been done at this point. I literally cut, welded, torched and beato on it.. tdipped it in a water barel to cool, then slid on and added bolts and nuts to check fit.. then rain caught me.

will pull it off, gring, prime and paint.
