The ground here finally dried out enough for the guy to come out and sprig our pastures today. My only mistake was that I forgot to bring along the camera. The equipment these guys use was pretty darn neat. They brought a Deere 7210 4WD tractor pulling the sprigger behind it. The sprigger was a huge pull behind beast consisting of a set of scarifiers on the front, followed by a row of discs, after the discs were the beater bars and the chain setup which functioned alot like a manure spreader. and dropped the springs into the furrows left by the discs. Above this section was the hopper where they loaded the sprigs. Behind this, at the back of the sprigger, they had a 200 lb steel I beam which was used as a drag to knock down the ridges from the discs, then behind this they towed a water filled steel roller. Really a neat setup... They had another tractor (a Case with a cab also), and on the loader they had a modified set of hay forks, with a sort of a cage looking setup they used to load the sprigs into the sprigger hooked up behind the Deere. They planted 12.5 acres of sprigs in about 3 hours. Not too bad. Tomorrow they come to put on some 2-4 D as a pre-emergent weed killer. Sure wish I had my camera today, cause that sprigger was something else. They said in about 10-14 days, I should see some grass starting to come up. A little rain would help (I am doing my rain dance), but hopefully not too much as to create alot of ruts and washouts... I'll get some pics of the finished pastures tomorrow. Next its time to start on the fence.
