Well I just got a set of milwaukee thunderbit split points, and I am wondering how I could sharpen them when they get dull. I cant seem to figure out if/how you can hand sharpen them, and I will not buy a drill doctor. Can I sharpen them any way? Or will I have to send them out?

Shield Arc, which part of the grinding wheel do you use to sharpen. I was taught to use the side of the wheel.

When ever I come across a split point bit I just sharpen them like any other bit.
I found this video on Youtube, pretty close to how I sharpen a bit.

This looks interesting.

Ok thanks. I will have to get a new wheel for my grinder though, this one seems to be warped, it wobbles side to side. (Might also be the el cheepo bench grinder) If it is the grinder, I will just set up my 70 year old v-belt driven grinder, and use it. Hopefully these milwaukee black oxide thunderbits will go for a while before I need to sharpen them.

I was taught to never use the side of the wheel, and the company I worked for the safety department would have a fit if they caught you using the side of the wheel. So I use the face. Few years ago I bought a green wheel for my bench grinder, I was going to use it for tungsten but I liked it better for drill bits.

Never use the side of a grinding wheel! They may come apart. The Green wheel is designed for carbide but works well on most hard surfaces. It will break down quickly and needs frequent dressing. I prefer a hard white wheel to dress tools.

And if a third to confirm what they said is needed, NEVER use the side of a grinding wheel. The WILL explode on you! If the surface isn't smooth, dress it with an appropriate tool.

You need to keep a good flat wheel on your grinder just for drill bits and I keep the other wheel for HSS lathe tools. Have a good light on your grinder and a water cup. Leep a cool tool while grinding and drilling. Do not turn the bit blue while grinding. Once blue you have ruined the temper of the steel. Blue chips out of your work are not good either. My Dad couldn't figure out why I got upset when he used my tool grinder for cleaning up a part after cutting with a torch.

cleaning up welds are what right angle grinders are made for...though I would have had to explain to "Dad" a time or two before I got upset with him. Spare grinding wheels are too cheap to take the chance on offending Dad.
