I borrowed my FIL's 6 ton Hudson Brothers equipment trailer to tow my new JD 5105 and equipment home. Before I headed out to pickup the tractor and equipment I did some research on how much the tractor, FEL and other equipment would weigh. I figured around 8,000 lbs so I went with 9,000 just to be sure. The trailer's wheels are pretty far back so I figured there would be way too much weight on the hitch ball for a non-weight distributing hitch so I bought a WDH and installed it. I then ran my 3038e onto the trailer and drove it forward until my tongue weight gauge read 1,000 lbs. I then hooked the trailer to my truck, engaged the WDH chains and measured the height of the trailer tongue from the ground.
When I picked up the 5105 and equipment I drove the tractor onto the trailer until the tongue was the same height that I measured before.
I could not believe how good that trailer pulled with the WDH on it. I could hardly tell the trailer was back there. I'm definitely sold on weight distributing hitches.
