Space Elevator

Just a pipe dream. We could do but won't for the cost. We would rather spend money killing each other. Besides how would we protect it from terrorists ? Yes they will still be around then too, especially if we humans do not change our intolerant attitudes.
I would love to see the Elevator thing built, but will not get my hopes up.

I can loan him my step ladder
Earth is moving the moon is moving at a differnt speed right?
Is Bradley C. Edwards related to that John Edwards that talks to the dead?

The elevator won't go to the moon, just into earth orbit. This would be a way to get stuff into orbit cheaply.

Yes just to orbit. This is a long time dream in the science fiction world of literature. Maybe they wcould just use a bunch of that spider wire fish line /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

"Yes just to orbit"

oh ok then they can use my ladder but it has a sticker that warns about using the top step

I sure wouldn't want to be standing under that thing if the cable parted.

Dennis I wouldn't worry about it falling ,as it's held in tension by centrifugal (sp ) force . But it might be mildly amusing if it got loose and floated away /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Either way I doubt it'll be realised in mine or my childrens lifetime . But it is an interesting thought ! John

I'm having a blast thinking of the possibilities for disaster. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif This thing is going ot be made of carbon. A carbon ribbon like this whipping through the atmosphere is bound to build up a load of static electricity. I'm sure they have a grounding scheme thought up, but what if it didn't work? Would everything for miles around be sucked up by static cling? Would it discharge and zap airplanes miles away? Maybe there is a way to connect it to the power grid and light a couple off cities off of it. The article said it was going to be paper thin and three feet wide. If a huricane blows around it would it act like a giant reed and start such a screech that everybody within a thousand miles gets their eardrums blown out? Anybody else have any ideas on what could happen?
