Sometimes you have to spend money to save money

He isn't around much anymore, but TBN member TnAndy has built the life which many of us dream of. He raises and slaughters his own meat, cans extensively, and lives a very independent lifestyle.

I was wondering what happened to TnAndy.
Anybody know?

He was last seen January 16. I checked before I posted. Another member who is MIA is RickB. He was a wealth of information, I made it a point to read any thread which he had posted in.

Either you're young or you didn't read the original post.

"MrsKilroyJC has decided we need to get some chickens." :)
You are a very perceptive person.

We lost TnAndy due to a chronic lung issue, he was like a father, brother, and best friend rolled into one for me. He was my high school Building Trades teacher and we remained close for the last 40 years. We all lost a vast array of knowledge when he passed away, not mention a loyal friend.

Spending to save sounds like my wife. "hun, guess how much money I saved today!"

Chicken food is too expensive for me to get eggs for less than the grocery store charges. On the other hand, it's teaching my 11 year old responsibility.

I'm saddened to read this. I found TnAndy to be the ultimate Homesteader with a ton of great projects under his belt. The last thing I remember him talking about was his new shop build, and how he was going to run pipe under the building to exhaust his sawdust. I was really looking forward to him posting pictures of that build.

Rest in Peace

Dang! I grapple with the same dilemma nearly every day.
I've got over 20 18 foot hemlock saw logs racked up, and need to put walls on the car park and rebuild a wood shed.

There are plenty of mills around, I just need to buy a trailer. l;)

Sometimes you can find a Sawyer who will come to you, if you have enough wood.

If it's a hobby and that's how you want to spend your free time that's one thing, but if you're doing it to save money that's another story. We raise chickens and goats and assuming your time has any value at all I'd guess we pay 3x what we would in a store, but we don't go into with the illusion that we're going to save money. After pricing some mills I'd have to think they would be the same. When I can buy 2x8 boards at Lowes today for less than $14 I doubt I could ever break even doing it myself no matter how many I made in my lifetime. Add in the need for PT lumber and plywood and the math looks even worse. But again, if that's how you like spending your free time then I wouldn't even worry about the cost if you can afford it.

It may be more economically profitable to buy ready-made materials, especially considering the current prices for lumber in stores. But this is not really my topic, my friend just does something similar. I am used to another thing, I spend money on casino bonuses, and gamblizard helps me double them. Therefore, my quote will be "it is better to invest not to save, but to earn". Investing in something is of course good, but now other things are becoming popular.
This is probably what he meant. There is no hidden meaning here.
