Way back in the 70's a truck with a bunch of drunk black guys ran into the back of my parked Volvo. I happened to be near the window of my workplace office and ran out. They were in a daze, and wanted to take off. I asked them to stop and called the police, who had a station on the block. The police came, we took the info, they drove off. they had rear ended the quarter panel badly and didn't seem at all concerned. I was pissed, but could not do much to change the outcome. My work building was in the black section of town, and drunk crashes were not uncommon, there or in the wealthier white areas. Everybody seemed to drink and drive.:confused3:
Anyway, I had to battle with the insurance co forever, but eventually got them to pay for me to rent my GF's car while mine was in the shop. I went to where Volvo sent the car to be fixed to find they had broken the other quarter panel tail light assembly. I went to the mayor of the town after trying to deal with the Volvo dealer, and the speeka the no English body shop, to no avail.
Eventually got it back, fixed. Big headache.
Here in VT some drunk skiers lost control of their SUV in the theatre parking lot and somehow found my XC-70 Ocean Race-Blue station wagon. They missed the light pole I purposely parked next to and hit my driver's side rear door, front door and took out my mirror, etc. I called the police. They eventually showed and I showed them how it must have happened. The officer found the skid marks and filled out a report. No note from the scofflaws, nothing. Because I had a police report and could show hit and run, it cost me nothing but aggravation.
Just came out of on site hotel parking in Burlington a week ago. Some idiot decided to use my 2015 Forerunner hood for skribble practice, down to the primer. I haven't done anything about that one yet.
Also years ago my mother was unpacking her car curbside at night. A drunk guy, himself the prior victim of drunk driving, ran into the car behind her, drove off and left her for dead in the street. Broken legs, and all kinds of trauma at around 70 years old. I got the call, the next day. Guy was uninsured, no license, (suspended for DUI's), and his family hired the local best lawyer to fight his case. Mom suffered long rehab, excruciating pain, etc. I had to twist her arm to even get her to think about suing the uninsured drunk motorist. She got nothing out of it. The insurance co supplied a low level idiot attorney and between them she got the raw deal.
I carry a 5 mil umbrella policy on my properties and vehicles to keep these idiots at bay as best as possible. It is a war out there - I've seen it, and it's NOT getting better anytime soon.
