Corn is coming along nice, some starting to tassle, and if I can keep the deer and coons away might have some to sell.:) The planter that I use might not be the fanciest but it does a good job of getting the seed in the ground. The liquid pig manure didn't hurt either. I had to spray postemergence because of the very wet spring and hopefully can do pre again next year.
I planted Siver King, Incredible, and Ambrosia, all popular varities in this area. King is white, Incredible is yellow, and the Ambrosia is bicolor. They are all Se., which means 30 to 35% sugar content.

Very nice looking corn. How much did you plant?

I put in 3 acres total this year for the first time ever. Put an acre of butter & sugar, acre of ecstase II and around 3/4 acre of silver queen, and around 1/4 acre of indian corn (dont remember the name of it,thought it might be a hit during the fall pumpkin season). First 2 plantings are tassling last 2 fields are around 18-24inches tall but got really wet last week as we had down pouring rain for 3 days in a row and it is all starting to turn yellow on the bottom leaves. Not sure what kind of yield I will get out of that.

This is the first time I have ever planted corn with a planter. I ended up finding an old jd 1240 4-row planter that work very well for very little money. I am planing to tear it down and paint it up this fall and winter to prolong its life.

Did you also fetilize? I used very little 18-18-18 when planting as I did not have much money (about 100#/acre). Then I sidedressed with urea after the corn was about 16 inches high or so (about 150#/acre). The ground was previously all sod that had not been used in around 20 years or so. So hope yeild turns out good. Make money to improve soil next year as I know I am going to need lime which I hope to get spread this fall so it will break down for next years planting.

What did you use for weed control? I sprayed roundup about a week before I tilled to kill weeds and grass then planted. Still had milkweed and some other weeks come up but not bad. Also used products simazine and pendant, which I think was put on to light as i didnt seem to help any.

Well hope you have a good yeild and no critter damage. keep us updated as I am very interested in how it turns out.

Hi JDkidde---I think we have about the same amount as you planted, 3 or 4 acres, give or take.
My neighbor put liquid pig manure on the fields, I had rye for a cover crop last fall and plowed it under this spring.
I used a post emergence spray, included Impact, Atrazine, a crop oil concentrate, and liquid nitrogen. Set the corn back a bit and made it yellow but it has bounced back and weed control is very good.
Good luck with your patches, I like the idea of Indian corn, that probably will sell well.
