Riptides, its easy for people to say what they would have done. In my opinion, you handled it correctly. Even more true since the outcome left nobody hurt.

I think carrying a phone with you would be some of the best protection. Dialing 911 as you are approached, and speaking to the person answering, has to end any planned invasion. Giving the intruder's description so they can hear you, and describing the vehicle in case they exit quickly, would likely prevent any future visits.

IPAD don;t phone home like ET. ISP do not hand out your IP to just anyone. Usually requires a bit of paperwork. Any LEO would be more professional. This guy was scamming you.

Apps will try to locate lost iOS devices (and Macs too). The App I have on everything is Find My iPhone. It also locates WiFi enabled devices.

And DHL, my bad.

True, and very easy to use an app like this.

Now, let's say you lost your device, and you have traced it to the OP's property. What's your next step?

Ask for a refund on that App?

If the Ipad has GPS, then yes, an app might have given him the location, and even the IP, but he didn't track it to your house because of the IP address.

Recall that I mentioned he tracked it via WiFi. And that is when more alarms went off in my head. I asked him "WiFi? How?" He said IP address. Well there ain't no free Wifi on my place. And, well there are things that must be done to connect with WiFi, if you know what I mean. On top of that, he said the area was between so and so and so and so that it could be found in. More alarms, because so and so is shall we say, signal dark. All in all, a good story, right on the edge.

Let this be a lesson for the rest of us.

A lot of us are in remote places.
When these type encounters happen you are usually in a surprised mode and trying to figure out the possibility of the situation. But always try to get the license plate number. At least the Law can look up the vehicle later.

Riptide, wasnt questioning you at all. Was agreeing his story was bs.

I just can not see a legitimate reason for anybody to be out on your property at that time of night. Either that person is a true imbecile or he is looking to rob you.

Around here - an action such as you describe is a lot more than bold - its just plain idiotic. Chances you will receive high calibre perforations is almost 100%.

Ipads, iphones, Macs can be located easily via GPS tracking using a simple app. I have found my misplaced iPad using this very useful app. That said, this guy was up to no good.

Only if they are getting a solid communication signal. Wifi also needs to be authenticated with, so.....my area, yeah, not happening.

Just to be clear... His Wifi comment was bogus. The iPad if activated will transmit its coordinates and can be pinpointed was another iOS device registered similarly. Has nothing to do with wifi.

It will transmit IF it has cell connectivity. And connectivity out here, is challenging.

We recently had a rash of home invasions in a very nice part of another county. They were targeting Asians and Indian families. The group had driven up from Texas to commit these crimes and are also wanted in other states. I don't expect something like that to happen here, but neither did they. Better safe than sorry. The country is going to **** in a handbag. No respect for law and order, and there appears to be a new attitude that anything goes, just don't get caught.

I don't want to be the guy caught unprepared.
