Some disking pictures from this weekend...

For those who like looking at tractor pics at work like I do. After a couple hours of mowing I switched to the disk. A little 5' lightweight but at $200 used it works for me. I didn't get a shot of or main garden, all topsoil and sand. I really have to work the disk to keep from burying the tractor. This red stuff had a good mix of clay (no rocks or iron ore as we call it) but with some sand to. After a couple passes I could still drop the disk all the way and not spin the wheels. It got down about as deep as the disk would go. The pictures with the more yellowish soil is still is about half and half clay/sand. I had a little trouble in it. It's an old garden that we are trying to clean up. It hasn't been turned in several years. I'll hit them again a couple times before rowing up and planting.

That's some really nice ground! I'm envious that you're discing at this time of the year, and of of the lack of rocks ,of course. As I look out today the ground is covered with ice and it will be several months yet before we can work it. When I do and when I disc you can hear the click, click, click as the disc rolls over the rocks.

Please don't tell me you leave the deer feeder in the garden after you plant it. Unless you are planting it for the deer.

Sometimes I just get lazy...I'll move it later.

We try and get garden stuff to grow in the spring, then put in a foot plot later. This is a new spot I cleared about 6 weeks ago. My guess is this year the weeds will be brutle. Might see the corn through the mess.

We'll start planting about Feb 1, hope for no more frost. I'll plant several blocks through March 15. If we get rain we'll have corn in May!!

You were lucky to be able to spend some seat time disking. I spent some time moving 9" inches of snow around.

Rob,

Seeing how far ahead you are, I'm feeling like a slacker!!! Is this the initial disking? I ask because I've heard that you are supposed to disk the ground to kill the weeds, then disk again when the weeds come back. Then after that you can grow stuff with minimal weeds. There's no stopping them, but at least it cuts down on how many you have to deal with.

I have allot of dirt to move still, but my goal is to be disking by March and planting peas in April. I honestly don't know if it will happen, but what the heck.

Is this garden for you to grow veggies? It looks like a good hunting spot and location for a deer plot.

Hey Eddie,

Probably going to plant the easy stuff, corn, peas, beans. It's not fenced so hopefully the local roaming cows will not find it(remember my first real good year for a garden was last year, took home some corn, peas..next weekend the cows broke in and leveled it..I;m going 6 wire this year!!!!!!)

With discing, turning, covering seeds that were on top of the ground I suspect a real mess this year..but we'll see. Coastal is usually not a problem, it'll disk easy, it's the other stuff. My main garden area I have been working for 3 -4 years now, still get goatweed and junk popping up.

since I have small areas and a disk, i might disk 4 times a year. After the garden is done and i see some weeds, grass, I'll disk it. About an hour to run over them all. If I had the time I'd go get my neighbors Ford 4630 and his 3 bottom turning plow. Maybe next trip.

when I did some research on planting coastal Bermuda, there is a way to sort of sprig it in for the fastest results. Special machine or something, I've never seen it done myself. I think you can also do this about anytime to...not sure. Common Bermuda seed I found should not be planted until about June. It needs warmer weather to get going.

You bet I'll post some pics...I like to think posting pics encourages others to post. Any tractor/farm pic is a good pic!!
