Sold my L-39 yesterday

I bought some building lots and based on owning a full sized hoe from 1990-2000 I figure I can save about $70-80,000 in excavating by simply selling my L-39 and buying a nice used CAT 416C, JD310E, Case 580SL II, etc. for about $30,000. That's what I sold my L-39 for ($29,700)

Far more machine than an L-39, L-48, JD110, and it has an enclosed cab w/ HVAC, twice the hydraulics, etc.....

Just for giggles: Here's a 2006 L-48 with 200 hrs. Asking price $35,500. More than the cost of a new L-39 by thousands. eBay: kubota L 48 2006 HST back hoe/ loader and more (item 160094782747 end time Mar-21-07 05:28:45 PDT)

Pretty easy to see a 1-2 yr old L-48 still asks more than a new L-39.

We have a well used JD 410D, 24" bucket, extenda hoe, 4N1 for sale for $8000. I think it weighs in at about 21,000 lbs. The hood is not tinny.

The hoods on the NH 575 I rented was paper thin. Even a dirt clod would have dented it. I'm hoping to buy a 416C. The sheet metal is pretty thin. Older machines like you speak of did have thicker sheet metal, then again, all older stuff had thicker sheet metal.

I guess if the looks are important, then dented hoods are a problem. The real meat and potatoes lay underneath. For resale, a tractor with good appearnace is a must for maximum resale.

Well, from the looks of my financial situation I may not be prepared to buy within your selling time-frame. I recently bought my 35 acres and currently building a house/garage, so there's not much left at the moment. I'm working hard to come-up with the funds for a tractor. Thanks, though. To date, I've had numerous opportunities.

P.S. When I checked out Full size TLB's at the Mass Con Show in Boston, for the money the NH BH95 & Terex 760 impressed me as the stronges earth movers. Of course the CAT's and Deeres are fine too, but that NH sure is built sturdy.

Mike, NH & Terex are commonly referred to as "bottom of the barrel" in full sized backhoes. Probably undeservedly, but they are. Now that case & NH have merged (Case/NH), I wounder if they've improved.

...... I would put the L39 up against ANY L series tractor Kubota builds. Period.........

All this talk about which is better L48 or L39 is interesting. Did you guys know that before there was an L35, or L39 or L48 there was an L5450 TLB that's 59 hp and weighs 9.5k with filled tires? It has an 11ft backhoe with 6200lb dig force, the loader is removable, it has 17.5x24 rear and 12.5x16.5 front rubber, hydraulic shuttle, wet clutch and is built to last forever. It does every heavy job the L48 does and quickly converts to do 3pt hitch jobs too. It was expensive in its day, but relatively unknown because not all Kubota dealers sold them. One other thing - the hood is not thick plate - but it does have a massive guard cage to protect it.
