 This is the reason for circuit breakers. Notice the flat spot in this power cord that goes to the power supply for my laptop. somehow at some point it got caught in my "lazy ba____ chair" between two metal parts. Smashed, and the breaker popped. I didn't even know it until the TV turned off. I then wondered why the UPS on the TV did not hold up the TV and associated equipment during this "power failure".. Looked at the UPS. It said 0 volts input and battery is flat as a road killed possum. I normally keep the UPS warning beeper turned off, because it is so annoying. Hm... other things in house seem to work, Just things in the living room. It didn't take long to track down the culprit, see below.

There has to be a better way to get a warm seat than electrifying your recliner.

What happens if you cut/damage the cable between the brick and the laptop -- which is then sending DC to the laptop? Will that back up the chain and exceed current on the AC circuit? I ask because those cables are usually thinner and more vulnerable. I know mine is looking a little beat. One time my laptop (thin MacBook air) slid off the couch and the nicely machined aluminum edge dang near chopped the chord that was laying on the hardwood floor.

Nope, wont blow the breaker normally. I have broken and repaired the little coaxial cable a couple of times. Hopefully the regulator in the power supply brick will current limit it. Apparently it did. No smoke.:)

I never even knew when it happened, The TV probably ran for close to an hour on the UPS. If I had left the UPS "warning beeper" on I would have known. But sometimes I will watch TV for a while when the power goes out, and I hate listening to the warning beep. On my APC UPS it is a programmable feature.
