Merry Christmas everyone. NJ about to get first strom of the season. Please help me with this: Both of my pto plastic shields (the one coming from the blower and the one coming from the pto) are loose on the drive line. Are they supposed to be loose on the line, or should they "click" in somehow? I've tried to hammer the shield till it clicks, but I'm afraid to brake it. Here's a pic of my set-up:

Re: pto shield

Looks like something has pulled loose. I wouldn't be afraid to break it. It's already broken. You can take the whole darn thing loose and flop it on the workbench. Thinks that don't work have a poor survival rate if they hit my work bench. The fur is going to fly.

What do you mean by loose? That they rotate freely independent of the shaft, or slide and expose the shaft?

The shield should rotate freely, and cover all parts of the shaft that rotate other than the ends. This is to prevent you from getting caught or piece of clothing catching and dragging you into the shaft.

A few weeks ago a 34-36 year old who was helping his father on a farm I was told was killed by a PTO. No details of the accident were released, I heard this from a freind who knows the family.

For some reason I couldn't blow up the picture at 1st. Now I see it looks like the outer shaft has pulled of the slip ring (white plastic). Yes it should be able to push up and snap over that so it stay on. Or it might be missing some retaining clips of some type.

Jay,

The PTO shaft shields are designed to prevent spinning.

I'm not familiar with your particular setup, but it appears that you should be able to "lock" the shield in place using the tabs on the "white" retaining collar. Are there indents on the interior of the shaft shield that line up with the tabs?

The white "ears" on that plastic colar should pop into the square cut-outs on the shield. I think you can push in on the white tabs to facilitate this.

Looks like the cup that covers the universals on the snow blower has come loose and slid forward. The universals are exposed. That's a bad thing. I agree that the slip guards on the PTO should be kept operational. I think an unprotected PTO shaft one of the most dangerous of all on tractor operation.

It's loose up and down the shaft. But I think many of you have answered it. The drive line spins freely within the guards, but the guards are stationary (connected by clicking the white tabs into the openings on the wide ends). Gonna need a hammer, I think, to click 'em in.

My thanks to all you kind people. You really help others who are not as knowledgable with great advice. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

on some of mine, you line up the tabs with the slots. you then push the guard on. when the guard is all the way in, you turn it one way to lock it on.
