Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

Well sorta....My father-in-law moved in recently while his house is being built. He is 70-something. Well he decide to help clear the driveway when it snowed.....what a mistake. Before I left out of town, I had went out and put up the orange driveway markers just in case. I pointed out to him where not to go and he said he was sure. I set down the night before and drew a map for him. As you can see I was really struggling with him getting in my machine. But he said he was okay and for me not to worry he would take care of my machine. My last night out of town, I got the dreaded call. The snow blower quit working. I asked all the usual questions about the pto shift lever, the pto button and all. Everything seemed to be where it was supposed to be. Well I got home, didn't go into the house, went right to the tractor. And looked inside the snowblower and found the shear pins broken and looked further and saw rocks all inside of it. When I calmed down, I went inside and there was my father-in-law waiting for me with a beer, his head hanging and apologizing. Felt bad for the guy, so I told him not to worry I'll repair the shear pins and everything will be good as new. Needless to say, if I go out of town again and its gonna snow, Ill call my buddy down the street with a plow truck and slip him $20 to come clear the driveway. A man hasta do what a man hasta do to protect his baby.......and no one is as careful as you are on your machine

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

Don't jump too hard on dad, sometimes the shear bolt wears just out. I have had the same snow thrower on my 455 and x495 for 13 years. One or more breaks every year.

Shear pins are cheap. Tip one back and tell the old man no problem. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

At least he apologized and knows he goofed. Enjoy him while you can, Tip that beer back and enjoy a few laughs over it.

He was probably having a blast on it until the Awwwwwww Sh----- happened.

At least the shear pins sacrificed themselves and did their job.

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

That's what shear pins are for.

Let us know when you break the first one. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

I've had shear pins break just from turning on the PTO. Not on my new machine, but on my last machine, the JD4200. My new machine just doesn't have enough snow use this year. But sometimes my pins would break after being on the shaft for awhile. You figure, there is a lot of torque on those pins. Why not just show him what to do when they break, that's what they are supposed to do.

He will only get good at it with experience.
Now you will get a plow truck in, and he'll accidently tear up some turf, or gravel....

I would just let the in-law get used to it, and go easy on him. These tractors are made to take some abuse.

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

Well, obviously, the problem is that the shear pins are breaking before your snow blower can toss those rocks. The obvious solution is to remove those weak, troublesome shear pins, and replace them with some nice, strong grade 8 bolts that are much less likely to shear off. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif That way you can get rid of those pesky rocks. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Cut your FIL a break - it was the manufacturer that put those cheap, breakable shear pins on your rock thrower. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

The shear pins on my 47" Blower can let go just by hogging into a snow bank so you don't need rocks to break em' but it helps /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
When I built my house I designed the drive and landscaping for snow blowing so I rarely find a surprise. However after the last heavy snow I thought I would nice and go over to the neighbors and help them out, well three shear pins later I had to give up as I was down to my last pin and my drive wasn't done yet so give your FIL a big thanks for trying and let him know it happens to the best sometimes.

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

For you gravel guys, the Deere single stage blowers WILL blow rocks and only occasionally shear a shear pin. Trust me, I know all about having to York rake the lawn each spring to reclaim all the missing gravel. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif And as for the original poster's problem, it sounds like the shear pins did their job.

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

I remember how my father-in-law felt when he used my riding lawn mower for the first time, and something broke. He didn't do anything wrong, but it was just that time. He had just retired from farming and was very careful with all his machinery. He had never been on a riding lawn mower (I had an 8hp WheelHorse and this was in the 70's) and he thought that was something else to be able to ride and mow lawn, not having to push the mower.
After we fixed it, he wouldn't get on it again. I felt bad that it broke while he was on it, and he felt worse.
I've done similar things while running someone else's equipment, and it is just one of those things. Hopefully it isn't due to a silly mistake and it is something that is just going to happen.
Wish I had my father-in-law back again, but he passed on early in his retirement. Miss him, as he was a great guy and a good pal. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

Yeah, they don't do so good with lawn chairs hidden under the snow either /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif What a mess it was cleaning that stuff out of there. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

My two bro's drilled out the 1/4" shear pins in their 3 point blowers and stuck 5/16" Grade 8 bolts in there. Hmmm, let's see, what's easier to replace - a shear pin or PTO drive? /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif So far, they've been lucky.

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

There is an issue with those blowers regarding the locking collars on the augers... sometimes they dont' get them real tight at the factory, and the impellar can "walk" on the shaft towards the front of the blower until it hits the housing...
they don't use a setscrew on the keystock, or a flat spot on the shaft,, so sometimes the setscrews can loosen up and let the impellar slide forward. Usually when this happens, it will start taking shear bolts pretty quickly!

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

Naw, I didn't give he a hard time. Couldn't do that...the guy has been too good to me. I am going to get him back on it the next few snow so he gets comfortable with the machine. His heart was in the right place and he was wanting to do his fair share around the house. Although I think I am going to have him use it to go get the mail and paper to get him used to driving it more so he understands I have no problem with him on it. But the way I figure it...someday I will be there and I hope my son-in-law does the same thing.

But based on what read about the pins, I think I will go get 3 or 4 spares.....just in case. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: Snow Blower doesn\'t blow rocks

Maybe I missed something here, but my Agro trend two stage 53" rear pto blower on my JD2210 has spit out lots of rocks and ice chunks without any shear pins giving up the ghost. I routinely blow 200 feet of the dead end street because I am tired of the plow either forgetting I exist or burying me in... hence the rocks.

oh well...
