I was walking around my pond with my German Shep today and I though I stepped on a stick. To my surprise this snake was trying to come at me. Striking into mid-air about 2 ft from me. I went back one of the barns that had the closest gun and grabbed my Savage model 24 22lr/410 over under. Two shots later I discovered it was only a watersnake. No diamond eyes or fangs to be seen. I wonder if this is the cluprit that ate my sons 8 ducklings this weekend? Seems kinda small to eat that many baby ducks!

Doesn't it? Last year I killed a 6ft + black snake that was eating all the chicken eggs. I caught it in the act. Normally I try to move the snakes to a different part of the yard but I thought this snake today as a copperhead.

Manganos:

You'd be surprised, last year I watched an oak snake about as long as the one you have picured but not as big around eat a full grown squirrel. Took him a bit but got it all down, I didn't stick around to watch him hauk up the hair ball.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

In case you didn't know, I believe your perp is a Northern Water Snake. They are often mistaken for coppherheads and watermoccasins, partially because they are pretty feisty.

gosh, you really showed that snake who's boss!
PS - water snakes don't eat ducklings...even if it was poisonous, it probably posed little or no danger to you. killing snakes or other creatures for no good reason should be avoided.
