I have an 8N with a front distributor, not sure of the year. It has been loosing power over the past 3 years, but not to the point that I couldn't use it for what it needed to be used for. Today, I go and start it, It belches some black smoke, and cannot get out of it's own way. I had just enough power to move it out of the barn, and get to what I needed in front of it, and back it in again. Where to start looking. I have done general maintainence on it recently, plugs, wires, oil, air, coolant. etc. Where to start, as the budget right now does not allow for me to drop it off at the implement dealer I am thinking head gasket, but am not sure.

black smoke and you are thinking head gasket? better check the tires first.....

black smoke is rich.. either too much fuel ( flooding ).. or restricted air flow.

easy to test air by slipping breather tube off mouth of carb. can also verify that choke flapper is not stuck closed.

if neither of those, rap side of carn to see if flaot might be hanging a bit.. if it is you might also see fuel pour out mouth when you pull air hose off.

didn't tweak the big downpointing main jet and open it up to 3 tirns out didja? that would do it too.

past that.. I'd do a thumb test on each cyl, at the spark plug hole.. see if it has vacume / pressure on each lung.. this lets you read each cyl too.

can also pull 1 plug wire at a time when running to see if 1 cyl make sless difference than the other 3.

lastly.. a compression tester costs 20$ at the chinese store.
post back some info.

Had a mouse build a nest in the oil bath air filter on a TO-20 one time, that made it have the same symptoms... Hope it's something this simple...
