Our Australian Shepard went out for her morning romp and obviously curiousity got the better of her... Any tried and true remedies for getting rid of the skunk perfume that my dog is now drenched in? Thanks

Snell,
The only thing that I found that works is a product called skunk-out. You can get it at most pet stores. I keep a bottle handy just in case the dog forgets to stay away from the next one!

I've also heard that tomato juice will cut the odor. Don't have first hand experience, thank God.

Tomato Juice does work. You will still have some smell but it is definitely better. I DO have first hand experience. Unfortunately. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

I'm with Von on using the "Skunk-out". We've been buying it for years from the local vet and it's the best product we've found. Still keep tomato juice around just in case, but rely on the skunk out when the dogs get into it with the occasional skunk.

I think de-stinkifying the dog has been covered pretty well, so I'll toss in my two cents about doing the same for the house, if it needs it. Here in the burbs, we occasionally get skunks under the house and sooner of later one 'em of let's loose with a bomb and the whole house reeks. /w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

A simple cure is to simmer some vinegar in an open pot on the stove until the whole house is permeated by the vinegar odor. It's only a couple-notch improvement over the skunk fragrance, but when you stop the simmering, the vinegar smell clears up fairly quickly, and the skunk odor is gone.

Done it twice so far, and it works like a charm. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Now don't lecture me about screening and stuff so the skunks can't get under the house in the first place. Been there done that a number of times, only to be thwarted by racoons who continually amaze me at what THEY can get through. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

We've had great success using Massengill feminine douche! Don't laugh it works wonders.
Our Shepards loved playing with skunks.

I'm really afraid to ask this question but HOW do you apply the douche to the dog to remove the smell? Does the dog mind?

Sorry I just could not resist!!!!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I'm still laughing! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Our vet recommened it to us about 25 years ago, SHE said she heard about it in school and has been using it ever since.
