Is this the right place to come to learn about/be talked out of a smaller (not mini) bulldozer?
In brief: I have a 100 acre northeastern woodlot that is only partially accessible because the class 4 (not maintained) road into it is deteriorated. The 1st 0.5 mile is just navigable with my 1 ton to get firewood and gives access to 2/3 of the property and there is another 0.5 mile that is in worse condition and prevents access to the remaining 1/3.
The road collectively probably has 6-10 spots that need drainage work that I could do with my little 38hp TLB but large portions are going to need something that can scrape and move more material, which is where the bulldozer comes in.
On the accessible portion there are numerous “truck trails” made by my late dad that we used to selectively cut and remove trees; I would like to do the same on the inaccessible part of the lot, and utilize my CUT & winch to make gathering firewood more efficient and selectively take out a bit of wood for the mill. I could see where the bulldozer could be useful there as well.
My end goal would be to make the 1st part of the road navigable with the 1 ton + dump trailer, because there is a good landing for loading at the 0.5 mile point at the edge of my property, and also ensure access to the last 1/3 of the property. I would expect the project to take a couple of years of occasional weekends and would sell the dozer afterwards. I see older equipment for sale that is 6 tons and under and which I could move myself. Is this a fool’s errand? Better to pay someone to fix the road?
Thanks for your thoughts.
