Well not completely tractor related, but as my Diesel is air cooled, I am looking forward to the answer....

I run synthetic on everything, usually from near the beginning of its life. My wife has a Mazda CX-7 (please never buy one). I have been reading that modern cars with turbos tend to blow the turbo's, and they are finding out it is due to sludge buildup going to the turbo. apparently on a number of new cars, the oil passages have been re-routed through hot spots. Apparently you are supposed to idle a turbo for 3 minutes before shutting it down (have yet to find verification of this but in a way it makes sense).

Anyway, I am debating dumping a can of tranny fluid in before my next oil change on both the Mazda and the PT.

Any thoughts on this? Any better ideas?

If your running synthetic oil in these turbo'd engines and change the oil regularly, you likely won't have any sludging issues. Synthetic oil has a higher vaporization and coking temp than regular oil and acts as a sludge cleaner in a dirty engine. I've not seen any sludging issues in vehicles that used synthetic oils and were maintained properly.

I'm not an expert. But IMHO cool down and sludge are two different issues. Idling a turbo, especially when run hard, allows the oil to flow and cool, preventing coking the oil I think. I learned about it with light duty trucks. Much more of a concern than sludge. But also in my opinion, unless you are running your cx-7 on a track, I would be surprised if it needed that long of a cool down. But maybe those turbos actually run more than a pickups. ???

Oh and I am not so quick to 'add stuff' to fix problems. A good example is in the old days two stroke oil in a tank of diesel was probably a good thing, helped lubricity. But modern engines are so tight and computer controlled that I wouldn't advocate that.
Modern synthetic is very good i think.
Also my 2 cents.
