I hope I can explain my situation well enough to be understood. I have a 48 Allis B that I have recently rebuilt, (mostly parts replaced), everything except the differential, which I know nothing about. When I start forward I get a definite slap in the rearend and the same when I start in reverse. There are no unusual sounds when traveling, shifting is normal. Is there a reasonably easy way to take this slop out?

Have you checked the center hub, to rim bolts..?? They could be loose causing the problem, but you usually hear a cracking noise along with that.

If that's not the problem, then I'd think the next place to look would be the ring & pinion gears, and on out through the finals.

Ok DJ54, thanks for the suggestions. I'll check that out and just hope the bolts are the problem. I've only driven the machine a couple times in the shop and not really enough to identify many ideosyncrasies.
