My yard is mainly K-31 and fescue blends and our hot summers really put a hurting on it - this is mainly a red clay soil.. In the spring/early summer when we have rain and not so hot, my grass looks GREAT.. but the natures of the beast with cool weather grasses takes over in the summer..

I rented a slit seeder for the day to get some grass seed down on it..

Couple questions..

1) I have the slit seeded set on the lowest (so it cuts the deepest) setting.. The other settings looked like it only scraped the surface, not cut into it.. Is this correct? it appears that I am getting seed down in the slots though..

2) I normally cut my yard at about 4.25".. but yesterday I cut it as about 3.5" in prep for this- BUT the slit seeder is really 'pulling up' either A) thatch or b) the existing grass (although it isnt the best grass, mostly weeds).. Even at a higher setting it was doing the same thing - it looks like I am de-thatching the yard with all this 'vegetation' on top of the soil.. Is this normal for a slit seeder on an existing yard?

thanks for any help you can provide

Brian
