Just picked up an Ortolan 48" tiller and new pto shaft and slipclutch from EA. Was wondering as to how to adjust the slipclutch to function properly with the tiller. Thanks

On my tiller the slip clutch came standard and in the manual the adjustment is described as the length of the spring coil. In other words it says keep tightening the bolts until the coil is compressed to a certain length. I'm not giving what that number is because I imagine many things can vary between the makes.

If I had to guess without actual numbers given I would tighten the bolts until the spring coils are just "locked up" and then back them out a half turn.

Part of this is operator preference! I recommend having them as loose as you can get away with and still do the job to ensure the machine is protected.

Remember to tighten evenly and that with the first use of the year to allow it to slip to be sure that it works.

Here is what I do. I attach my tiller and pto shaft to the tractor. With the tractor OFF I engage the pto to lock the shaft. I loosen the slip clutch nuts/bolts until it slips easily by moving a tiller blade by hand. I tighten the nuts until a strong foot on a blade is needed to slip. I tighten the nuts 1/4 turn more and head out to some dirt. I start tilling and testing the slippage. If excessive, I turn the tractor off, tighten another 1/4 turn and till some more. I repeat as needed to get the desired level of slippage I feel works best for the ground conditions.

Your tractor and tiller are power/sized compatibly. The clutch should be tight enuf to bog the tractor down gracefully and stall it without slipping. - but should slip in a quick bog/stall situation. You can tell if its slipping by stopping to feel it on suspected occasions. It should not run hot. A little warm is usually about right unless youre in light going. Then it shouldnt slip at all and will be"cool".
