Slightly (way) Off Topic ... Pool cover improvemen

I know this is way off topic but I'm sure, as always, I'll plenty of usefull answers. I'm looking for an adhesive to bond white plastic to a portion of my pool cover. I have an above ground pool (21x41) witha solar cover and reel. My wife and kids cannot/will not cover the reel with the white plastic provided so the solar cover will doesn't over heat. The last heavy duty cover lasted 1 1/2 seasons before seperating and taking on water. I want to laminate white plastic to the end so that when the cover is reeled up the white will be automatically exposed. The chalange is to find an adhesive that will not kill the plastic, remain flexible and hold up to constant contact with water ... think it exists?...Scozz

I install swimming pools for my familys business ,I have never had anybody ask me this before, but the same glue used to patch liners or blow up rafts may work. It will hold up in the water and pool chemicals, I do not know if it would melt the cover or not. I would try it in a small area first.

need more info, does the reel sit on a wooden deck? Your main goal is to protect cover from sun when on reel?

The reel sits across the 21' span of the pool most of the time. The reel is removable but is only taken off on weekends when we use the pool "heavily". The whole purpose is to protect the solar cover from the sun. I was considering a heavier light colored tarp and perhaps dabs of silicone every 6" or so.

Any idea of just what that glue is and if it can be bought in bulk ... never seenit in anything bu 1/2 pint dabber's that come with kits...Scozz

Can you paint it white where desired? There are several flexible paints on the market and I wonder if one would stick well enough.

I never thought of that ... just might work if flex additive was used like they use on soft body parts when painting cars.

I just cover mine with a tarp, actually cut up tarp. I just tie it around the reel via the grommet holes in the tarp. It's green, but will absorb a lot less heat than the solar cover does.

Problem is my wife opens the pool for the kids to swim .. the kids can't cover the reel when its across the pool so it sits there and bakes /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

How about making some double-ended clamps? One end would clamp to the ends of the solar cover. The other end would clamp to a white plastic sheet. Just flop it over the side of the pool when the cover is in place and let the double-ended clamp things pull it around and over the cover on the reel?

My cover attaches to the reel with these kinds of clamps.

A pool equipment place may have some replacement clamps that you only need to put a piece of nylon webbing in between to have a double-ended clamp.

Main problem I've had is the plastic reel handles started falling apart. One is almost gone now. The plastic is some kind that just gets more and more brittle.
