Skunk living in wellhouse-Advice on getting him out

They all love a bowl of cat food. Skunks, squirrels and about anything else around here. I won't tell you what to mix in with the cat food to get rid of them permanently but if it kills a rat it will kill a skunk. We had a major skunk problem in Corpus before and were shooting them in the back yard almost every night. I didn't think it was possible for there to be that many in one place. It only takes getting sprayed once to be a little upset about it.
It only takes the squirrels eating through a power line in the wall of your house once to take care of that problem real fast too. I woke up to smoke one night from one of those. That house had old screw in fuses that didn't pop and it darn near burned it down when the squirrel chewed through a wire.

Interesting timing of this thread. This morning, my daughter went out side to feed the cat. She screamed the second she got out the door "SKUNK!!" and came right back inside. I looked out the window and saw a beautiful skunk with the fullest, thickest tail that I've ever seen in a stair off with our cat. They were about four feet apart, face to face. After a few seconds, the skunk turned and walked away. I'm not sure why it left because my daughters screams didn't seem to have any effect on it.

Question is what to do now?

We're polluted with skunks around here. The dog's won't keep them away... they just get sprayed... Not fun when it happens 3-4 times a week. The skunks own the yard when they're out there.

The only real solution that I've had success with is a spotlight and a .22LR.

The skunks around here become active right around sunset... then it's just a waiting game. My wife and I have a dopted a "shoot on sight" policy with regard to skunks in the yard. No more sprayings since. Back in the fall, when we were really having problems with them, we'd scan the yard with the spotlight before letting the dogs out... even though they're black, they show up pretty good under the spotlight. They won't run away from you, so you just walk up to a safe distance, and pop them. Usually they spray, sometimes they don't. I usually let them lay until the next morning, then take them out to the field back behind the house to feed the birds. The buzzards usually have them all cleaned up in 2-3 days. Nothing goes to waste.

If you or your dogs do ever get sprayed, here's the only thing that I've ever seen that WORKS... Paul Krebaum's Skunk Spray Remedy. Don't mess around with tomato juice or whatever... you just get a skunky, tomatoey smelling dog. The Remedy WORKS!! And, you make it yourself, even better!

Teach your kids not to scream or do anything to scare the skunk. Move a long distance away from it and just observe one of natures critters. Your cat already has proven to be able to defend its territory against the skunk so the skunks probably will not get to be a problem in your area.:)

I've got to tell you all, thank you for the help with your replies!! Tallyho8's reply was about the funniest thing I've heard, and depending on what kind of brother in law a person has, may be the best answer I've ever heard for a skunk problem!!! LMBO!!! Mine is a tool pusher for a drilling company so he's usually not around anyway!!

Since the building is so small that shooting it in there is out of the question, and we have barn cats roaming around the place that definitely serve a purpose regarding the mice, I don't think poison of any kind will be a good option either.

I guess the live trap and tarp idea will be the way I'll have to go. I was hoping there was something out there that due to smell might drive them away. Guess not, so I'll buy a havahart trap and try that one first.

Thanks again for all the replies!

I would use a conibear 110 body trap draped right over his hole. He sticks his nose in it and it closes around his neck and snaps it instantly. He will spray a little when dead, but it is guaranteed and fool proof. He will never come back.

Skunks don't need to get into a stare down. He wasn't afraid of your cat. He isn't afraid of a mountain lion. They have only one natural enemy, owls. Death from above and in the dark. Notice the skunk turned its back? If it was scared, it wouldn't have turned it's back. Skunks also have terrible eyesight. You guys can try the havahart and tarp trick. All I know is that I've never been sprayed by a dead skunk.

Park your vehicle by the pump house and run a hose from the exhaust into the pumphouse. That should eliminate the skunk.:D

Funny, I tried this with a possum I had trapped in a 55 gallon barrel last year. I ran a 2" pvc pipe from my diesel truck into the bung hole and removed the small vent hole for the exhaust to come out of the barrel. I idled it about 20 minutes then went to remove the carcass from the barrel. When I popped the top off the possum jumped out and ran away.:(

Do I have a clean-burning diesel or can possums hold their breath a long time?

This was the same thought that came to my mind. One more good purpose for a tractor. The skunk likely would not know that anything unusual was going on. He'd just quietly drift off into eternal sleep.
