I have a few rock ridges that run through my horse paddock, and I am thinking of knocking them down when I renovate the paddock next month. I got a quote of $450 to rent a bobcat with a rock hammer, delivery Saturday, pickup Monday AM.

The rock is a hard limestone, and the ridges I would be attacking would be 2 feet at the widest with a total length of maybe 30 feet (spread through the padock). Plan would be to excavate around the ridges with my tractor, and then beat on them with the rock hammer, and then back fill.

Has anyone rented or used one of these? How hard are they to operate? For those experienced, does this seem like a feasible project?

Thanks

I have used the hoe ram on a bobcat and a mini excavator...personally I liked the mini excavated because I could reach more areas. I used the hoe ram on concrete...can't say for sure about how it will work on limestone although I would imagine it would work fine. Why not the mini excavator though?

The mini-excavator is 1/2 again as much to rent..since I should be able to get right up to the rock ridges and since I just want to knock the tops off them, I figure I should be able to accomplish that with the smaller, less expensive machine....but then again, what do I know as evidenced by my starting this very thread.

My experience is that the heavier (more down pressure) machine will do a faster job.

Also, be sure to have some hearing protection handy your gonna need it.
