skid steer mounts

Hi guys,

Now that my new tractor is on order (MF 1552) I have to think about swapping my front-mounted implements (snow plow, forks, stone bucket) from the Massey pin-style quick mounts to the skid steer style mounts. Where is the cheapest place to get the mounts to weld onto those?

Got the plates yesterday. I guess I wasn't aware when I ordered them that you need to supply and weld your own plate along the top?

Seems like a good idea except for the fact they won't work like they are.

No directions were included that I could find... I sent the company an e-mail.... I'm also hoping that Spudland_Dave will chime in as to what he had to do with his plow project...

I'm kind of feeling dumb for not realizing this when I ordered them, but I hadn't had one of these mounts before and I ordered them before my tractor arrived....

With those plates you will need to weld a piece of iron on the top. Usually it is 3/8" thick by about 1.5" wide. Mine are set at a 45 degree angle on top. You could try mounting the plates onto your skid steer attachment and then welding on the top to match.
The lack of the top bar is one of the reasons the price is lower and for easier shipping.

My skidsteer stuff varies from 44.5-45" on the inside measurement of the attachment plates. I have a weld on bobcat plate that is 44.75" inside to inside. Best to leave it a little on the wide, so it is easier to attach. (Cut your top bar 44.75" and weld it to the inside of the plates.)

Also when you weld the top bar in place, it is also best to weld it to the bucket. This will give it better support than just the welds to the plates.

On a serious note, as posted, a strip of 1.5 or 1.75 x 3/8" Flatstock does the top bar...and its at a 45 degree as posted. I just used my Aluminum framing square and the angle came out perfect.

Technically NONE of the plates work like they are...unless you're looking for a place to stick decals too....figure they all need to be welded to a bucket or something like that.

The top lip is what takes all of the break out force and all of the weight carring, I would make sure you know what you are doing when it comes to welding it.

While I can't speak for the OP, I'd like to consider myself to be fairly compentent in most things mechanical. Having a set of instructions that tell me what sized material to use, what type of steel to buy and their recomendations on the angle and welding points would sure go a long way towards my purchashing this product.

Very true... I've been welding (not professionally) for ~12 years now...so I'm confident with my work...nothings broken on me yet...

DMF, I guess I never answered your questions on how I did it....This is how I did it... as mentioned I used 3/8" x 1.5" Stock (if I were to do it again I would have used 1.75 stock, but i had the 1.5 here already in my inventory)
-Using my aluminum Framing Square and some Welders magnets I placed the 1.5" stock across the top and squared everything up tack welded it and tested on my QA...once I knew it was good I welded it up permanently, Bead along the back, NOT on the inside as the inside angle needs to be "crisp". I did both sides the same... I then tacked the two plates to the blade and squared everything up again (squared the 2 plates so they were squared together...dont want my blade crooked )... welded the plates to the blade and then also added some gussets on both the Top & bottom lips on the plates....there is NO Way these plates are coming apart... for pics on how I did my blade see this thread:

Oh....another helpful tool I used was I slapped a piece of scrap 5/4 Deck Board on my table saw and ripped a 45 degree along one edge..I then cut it to the correct length to fit into my existing bucket/forks/etc.. so I essentially had a "Go/No-Go" Gauge...

Hi Eddie - I agree with you 100%. My only ignorance in this case was not knowing exactly how the skid steer mounts work due to not having them before, Had I waited to order the plates until after my tractor arrived, I probably would have noticed that something is missing and questioned it before hand. In my effort to have everything available at once, I ended up putting myself a little behind (not the first time I've done THAT! )

Most people use a 1/2" x 2" flat plate stock to put across the top. There are many different sizes of quick attaches so we do not know how long this would be. You should be able to get this part locally, but if not I can send you 3 pc's. Please let me know how long you would like them. I will get you a price per part if you can supply me with the length.

If they are $59.99 each (2 required per mount), then these plates are no real bargain... especially without the top piece. I have bought plates on ebay before and been very satisfied. Just search ebay using "skid steer mounts" as your search phrase, and you will come up with several. The following url will take you to one example that would be less than $120 with shipping (depending on location). I prefer the pieces already connected together, or the large solid plate, because the side to side spacing is already determined.

S....l....o....w....l....y getting this done. My friend (indefinately) loaned me his stick welder (he has a MIG and TIG welder anyway) so I am teaching myself to weld...something I haven't done since high school. I have the plates welded to my snowplow frame, I just need to get the stock for the top angle pieces... More updates/pictures to follow.

My welds don't look all that pretty...but I think they are strong. We'll see I guess...
