Hey, new here. Starting a log splitter build and have a question. I have a 17.5 hp Briggs and Stratton riding mower engine with a verticle shaft. I was wondering if a 2 stage 11gpm would be big enough for the 17.5 or do I need to go bigger with like a 16gpm. I have no ideal about hydraulic pumps. Any help please..

You got it backwards. You need to question weather the motor is big enough to run the pump at rated pressure.

Since you are talking about a logsplitter, I am assuming you are talking a 2-stage pump. If so, you have plenty of HP for either of them. And can even go as big as a 28gpm 2-stage. All though the 22 and 28gpm pumps jump a bunch in price.

In the off chance you are talking about a single stage pump, and assuming 85% efficiency, thats about 8.5gpm max @ 3000psi and about 10gpm max @ 2500psi

I guess what I should have asked is, will the 17.5hp running at 3300rpm burn up an 11gpm 2 stage pump or do I need a bigger 2 stage pump. Thank you for replying to my question.

The max speed on the two stage pumps is 3600 rpm.

The limiting factor is the HP to drive a pump, and you have enough to use any of the two stage pumps.

It will run those pumps at 3300 rpm all day long.

To answer the question, NO, there is no harm in using too much HP on the pump. The pump is protected with a pressure relief. The only thing too much HP will do is waste fuel. I would recommend going with a larger pump. A 22gpm pump will be twice as fast as an 11gpm pump if everything else is the same.

Matching the engine to the pump is the eazy part. When going with the 22-28 gpm pumps it becomes more difficult and expensive to effectively match the remaining hydraulics.Normal log splitter cylinders have 1/2" ports, this puts a restriction on flow causing heat, cylinders with 3/4"or larger ports can be had but the cost will double. The larger valves, hoses, filters, and reservior must also be considered.
