A friend of mine has a JD 950. It's 4wd, rated at 27 hp (not sure if that's engine or PTO). He is looking to do some light plowing for food plots and gardening. He has a few cultivators and harrows, but needs to turn soil over that hasn't been turned in years. Soil is soddy, some weeds (brush hogged once a year), and clay with little to no rocks. He is unsure of what size plow the tractor can pull. I've read 1 hp per inch, or 20-25 hp per bottom, but not sure if this is for speed or ability to pull.
I looked at a 16" 2 bottom last week at an estate auction, and it looked huge to me. I'm fairly certain my 3120 wouldn't pull it, but I also don't have the traction of my friends 950 (lower weight and turf tires on the 3120).
Any insight on what the 950 would be able to pull? He doesn't need to win any races, just want's to be able to pull it through. Thanks.
