Single or double grapple?

I really haven't seen a definitive breakdown of the advantages/disadvantages between single & double lid grapples. IMHO - the style and method of activation are probably more important. I have - Land Pride SGC 1560 - 820# - 60" wide - single lid. Its a real brute and does all I ever ask of it.

The SGC1560 is what is called a rock & root grapple. Its activated thru a WR Long electric over hydraulic third function system.

I am not sure that this is a definitive benefit or not of a double lid.....I have had both....a double lid for my Bobcat T190 and a single lid Landpride 54 inch for my Lil BX. But the double lid for example can close on a large end of a tree trunk, and as the tree gets small there other lid can clamp down on it. Hopefully that makes sense. In theory you should able to have better hold on stuff with a double lid.

We have two grapples, a 56" WR Long OBG2 double lid and a 48" Wildkat single lid. In our applications, which usually involve picking up brush and tree limbs and such, both work well. For picking up logs or any other object that is not of uniform size I prefer the double lid for the reason Old Red said. I use the 48" single lid most of the time because a/ since I work in the woods some, less width is sometimes helpful and b/ the Wildkat has spade-like ends on the tines and the spades help grubbing out small growth. Still, if I had to pick one of the two I would pick the larger OBG2 with the double lids because all things considered I think it is the most versatile and the most durable.

I have the dual lid 64" WR Long OBG2 grapple and you can't beat it when hauling stuff that's not uniform in size. I've used it to haul tree debris, junk, etc.
