Many cutter manufacturers offered what was known as a "hayside" option on rotary cutters. For normal operations the deck was left with the side on. For cutting forage crops, the "hayside", normally the left side for conventional rotation cutters, was removed to reduce the mulching effect of the deck. Fields were mowed in a clockwise pattern allowing the discharge to come out the left rear of the cutter and then be raked and baled. Few manufacturers currently offer this option with the advent of disc mowers.
