Should I grease it?

I would consult your local dealer or call JD direct and find out the corect answer.

It is possible that they changed bearing types and did not update the manual.

Or, have the bearings ever been changed?

just my $.02.

But still, why do they put fittings on the spindles? What's the rationale?

Ya got me there! I have no idea, unless as cj7 mentioned, they changed the design at some point. On the bright side, if the bearings blow out, with a zerk you have the option of going to a greasable bearing here (assuming the zerk actually connects to something that lets grease into the bearing).

Well I called my dealer and asked him about the grease zerks. According to JD the spindles have sealed bearings and the zerks are used at the factory to ease the assembly process and additional grease would have no beneficial effect. However, overgreasing "could lead to premature failure of the sealed bearings". He recommended that I not grease them.

Well, this seems to be the definitive answer. Thanks Pitbull!
