Shopping for a dam (H2O) builder in NC

I have future plans for building a lake on my land and am shopping for a professional dam builder in central NC. When I check the yellow pages I see a lot of grading companies, nobody specifically mentions dams. I am not talking about digging a shallow hole for a pond. I am going to build a dam in a steep creek valley, and back the creek up in to the valley, maybe flooding 10 acres. I'll need overflow pipes, etc. This will be holding back a LOT of H2O! Anybody know someone, or know a better place to look than yellow pages?

coyote, I'd call Newsome's Grading. Bill lives in Southmount and has built a lot of ponds and dams. Maybe even a little closer is Hedrick Grading. Lanny and his dad Lowell have built many ponds around the area. They are on old 64 between Lex and Silver Valley. HTH, later, Nat

I would check with the local NRCS office. North Carolina NRCS They can tell you if there are any laws in your state regarding the impoundment of flowing water (streams/creeks). They also should have a list of contractors that they recommend to build ponds/dams/lakes.

When we reclaimed out pond the NRCS Engineer came out and basically oversaw the project. He made sure that the contractor (which was on their list) did the job correctly. BTW this service didn't cost a dime. That's part of his job.

Since I had never built a pond before I discussed what I wanted with the NRCS Engineer and the contractor. I got the final say-so, but the Engineer kept the contractor from blowing smoke up my B#tt.
