Shop-Vac....why did it quit working?

motor bearings went out on my craftsman shop vac that i've had for about 20 yrs. Couldn't find any replacement, sears parts don't support that model any more. bought a Rigid one from HD, it stopped working after a couple of uses. Had a broken wire going to the switch, so I just had to fix the break.

I have noticed during the past few years that it is becoming very hard to get parts for Craftsman ANYTHING more than a few years old...used to be they stocked parts for just about any item ...they have probably jumped on the bandwagon to discourage people repairing something in the hopes they will buy a new item instead.

Do you happen to know who makes the Shop Vac motors? Shop Vac wants me to buy a new Power Unit Assembly (#1944233) for $67.55 when all that is wrong is the on switch is failing. I can replace that if I can find an on switch replacement part.

You can either wire in a universal toggle switch or bypass the switch altogether by hard wiring the connections with wire nuts and use the cord to turn the vac on and off by plugging it in/unplugging it.

Thank you! I started a new thread with this same premise and have gotten quite a few links to toggle switches as well as found a few on my own. Appreciate the reply! RLS
