KUBOTA B7610
Has anybody with a Kubota 7610 or similar tractor have had any problems shifting from neutral to low gear with the hydro transmission? It does not seen to matter if the tractor is on flat ground or on a hill, I have tried setting the parking brake prior to shifting out of gear with the clutch and brake set and it still locks out. The PTO is not engaged, and the tractor has approximately 40 hours on it. This has been happening off and on again for awhile. Other than this, the tractor has been working flawlessly and I dont think I could have gotten anything better! Any info is appreciated. Thanks, John

Try rocking the HST pedal just a little while range shifting just to get the gears lined up.

IN addition to what Kubmech advised...almost hesitate to add anything cause I respect his advice so much...you may also try changing ranges without the clutch when the tractor is almost stopped, but slightly moving.

On my B2910, this works most of the time real well. And when it doesn't want to work, simply pushing in the clutch for some reason does make the range change go smoothly. Why? I don't know.

When stopped and deciding to change ranges if it does not go easily without pushing the clutch, I tend to first try moving the tractor slightly, and then try moving between ranges as the tractor is stopping.

I am never in neutral on my tractor...always in one range or another...maybe the need to be in neutral is different between my B2910 and your 7610? Don'r know why it would be but it might.

IN the beginning changing ranges was a pain and so I tended not to do it. But after I found it is easy, without clutching most of the time, by just doing it when the tractor is slowing to a stop, I now change ranges all the time if I have any distance to move...

I must say I don't understand why you need to be in neutral to begin with...since I am never there except for the instant it take to pass through from one range to another...

Kubmech, Thanks for the information, I will try that next time it happens. I probably should have also stated that when it happens I have found that if I increase the engine RPM's then drop it back to to an idel it then usally goes in gear but you have to almost force it which I do not like or want to do . Thank you again Kubmech. John

Henro, Thanks for your information, I'll try your way to along with Kubmech. The reason I use neutral and not leave it in gear is that I have found that when I'm get off the tractor or getting back on my pocket or my pager hits the PTO lever then I get that wonderfull sound of grinding gears. If I'm doing alot of seat work I don't use neutral at all or as you stated just going from low to high is all I see of neutral. Thanks again, John

Henro, the more opinions the better. Your way is the same effect just a different technique. Those straight cut gears have to be lined up with each other before they will mesh. If the teeth are'nt lined up you can stand on that lever and the only thing you will succeed in doing is breaking the aluminum, yes I said aluminum, shift fork and that wont be cheap. Some of the guys with older tractors need to be in neutral in order to engage the starter for the next start. I highly recommend the older machines be shut down in neutral and engage the parking brake. If shut down on a slight incline/decline it may not be possible to shift in to neutral for starting because of the load of the tractor resting against the gears. The newer machines had the neutral start saftey switch moved to the HST pedal to eliminate this potential problem. There are also some machines (B21 I know for sure) That have been upgraded to a cast iron shift fork. B21's are used in a lot of rental houses. I have replaced more shift forks than I can count on the B21's. If the range wont shift, people just force it, heck it aint their tractor, and POW there goes the fork. I don't see the cast iron fork holding up to a determined individual but they should be better.

my 7610 sometimes seems to not like to shift into low or high sometimes. I play that up as the gears not entirely lined up. I do the same as kubmech does just rock the hydro pedal a little and it usually just slips into gear. My wife's ATV does the same thing sometimes. I find that I have to rock it back and forth to line up the gears to downshift it sometimes when it is stopped.

I have found the same thing also. The B1600 doesn't want to go into gear from neutral when running, so a slight pressure on the HST pedal and a gentle pressure on the lever, and it slips right into gear. I put my tractor into neutral when off it for more than a few seconds, incase one of the kids comes around and pushes on the HST pedal, and runs over me or them. It's hard to un-do an accident after it's happened. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Hit it hard with some WD-40 or the like. It worked for me on my BX with similar problem.

My 7610 does exactly the same thing and, like others who've responded in this thread, I try depressing the HST or I'll let the tractor coast forward/reverse if I'm on a hill. Or I'll even just drop it into gear w/o the clutch.
