Shear pin

Broke a shear pin on my Razorback Bushhog yest. w/ my Kubota. It has 3 lines on it like a Grade 5 bold does. Is it as simple as going to my Home Depot or Lowes and buying a similar bolt, or do I need a special bolt from the dealer that will break under certain pressure? Thx.

Most likely that's all it is. My Woods snow blower uses a grade 5 bolt that I pick up at any hardware store (but came with a grade 8 from the factory, a whole other story!). Check the manual, mine says any grade 5, 1/4 inch by 1 inch will do. I just keep a few in the tool box on the tractor.

Ok thanks. One more question. Is this bolt threaded in or do I just slide it in, put the nut on, and tightern it down? Reason I'm asking is b/c I tried taking it off several months ago, and the bolt just spun and spun. Maybe the threads are shot?

The holes on the driveline should be clearance (not threaded). Buy a handful of the right bolts and self-locking nuts to match. You don't want much clamp load and with plain nuts they'll vibrate right off /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The replacement bolt is common hardware. Check your mower manual for the correct bolt. Sometimes the assembler at the dealer just sticks a bolt in! I use the normal nut and sometimes add a lock washer. Never a problem. Lightly tighten the nut onto the bolt.

If you buy a bolt that's long enough so it sticks out of the nut by a few threads, you don't need any locking harware. Just use channel-lock (or vise-grip) pliers to slightly flatten the threads that you protrude from the nut. The nut will never come off by itself and you can still remove it if you ever want to. This just saves having to fool with any locking hardware. I've been doing this for over eight years and I've never had a nut back off and come off the bolt. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
