Just bought a 5' KK tiller and seen that the blades were not very sharp. If I were to sharp the blades I believe this would help to cut up the weeds. Has any body ever done this?

Not on a tiller, maybe on a mower.

Any sharpening of ground-engaging surfaces will happen as they scrape the soil and the soil scrapes the metal (depending on the design). Mostly, a cutting edge will nearly instantly become dull.

The grass will be chewed up by the blades forcing the foliage into the dirt.

I agree; never sharpened tiller blades, and I suspect the only thing that would do is cause them to wear down faster.

They will sharpen themselves as you use it.

Have not had to do my KK but I have done a cheap walk behind tiller. It made a world of difference.

Of course it will "wear" the tines earlier but they will indeed use less horsepower if they are sharpened. Dull plows and discs are hard to pull also.

How do you sharpen a plow?

The tines for my JD tiller that is made by Sicma come sharpened from the factory. The thing is, they are sharpened on one side as you would expect, but after only a few minutes in the ground, that sharpened side is removed and a new one on the opposite side of the blade is formed. The point is, as I said above you do not have to sharpen the blades. They will sharpen themselves.

My dad used to take plow shares to a blaksmith shop (where are they today?) and have them built up by welding and resharpened. >1948

There is, or used to be a couple "weld on" hard surfacing products....
One you put on with a oxy acetylene torch much like brazing rod...
The other was an ark welding type rod...

The way it was used, is to put it on one side of a cutting edge and let the other edge ware off...
Leaving a some what self sharpening more resistant edge...

The way it would be used on a tiller blade would be on the underside of the sharpened edge...

I've seen this used on coulter disks, and one way plows with good results...

Good luck

I actually sharpened the tiller blades once on my KK tiller and it made a noticeable difference. Prior sharpening it was donkey kicking having a hard time to bite. After sharpening I sank right in and tilled great. For me I sharpen them every other year now with just a quick turn with the angle grinder.
