How do you replace a fuel pump without noticing the fuel level???o_O
I've seen guys takes carbs off for rebuilding and tear into ignitions when the only issue was out of gas. That's why I say to start with the easiest answer to any problem and gradually escalate rather than the reverse.

ok, this one has gone on awhile I'm barely a backyard shade tree automotive "mechanic" but every gasoline fuel pump I've replaced involved me dropping the fuel tank and its located in the tank. If you don't notice its empty when you drop it and open it up, I don't know what to say.

On older vehicles they sometimes had the fuel pump mounted outside the fuel tank inside the frame rail.

Mom had the fuel pump go out on her old Nissan pickup. It took me longer to figure out which wrench and socket I needed for the mounting bolts then it did to swap it out. Did it in the parking lot of her work in about 10 minutes.

Fuel pump was located inside the passenger side frame rail just behind the truck cab.

What a foolish location. It could be stolen so easily. Better to bury it in the tank. ;)

I've been unfortunate on my selection of cars with failing fuel pumps they were always in the tank and of course it was normally full when it decides to fail..

On one of my old beaters I dropped the tank broke the strap holding the tank, broke the fill hose, spilled gas all over me and the ground, only to have a buddy come over to show me the car had an access port under the backseat above the tank.:ROFLMAO:

On almost all older vehicles the fuel pump was on the side of the engine and driven by the cam shaft. when fuel injection became popular is when they started being mounted in fuel tanks.

kind of funny story had an old fuel injected beater in HS I had a lot less abilities and tools than now, car would die randomly turn the key no sound of the fuel pump so I replaced the pump in the tank 2x on a gravel driveway lucky i was thinner back then. Car died again. Swore up a storm and slammed my feet on the floorboards fuel pump kicked back on. turns out the wiring to the pump along the inside of rocker panel was bare, and shorting to ground...

That's what they taught us in the only automotive repair course I took. I always feel pretty stupid when I forget that lesson, and try to fix something that ain't broken.
