Back in the early eighties I saw a dog ride on top of a fuel tank in the back of a half ton that had artificial turf on it - from Saskatchewan down to central OK for the wheat harvest. That dog loved being up there with her head pointing over the cab. We had to call her down when it was raining or some other condition but the wind didn't bother her.I have seen a dog (without a harness) fall out of the back of a moving pickup truck.
