I’ve got way better tie down options than a pickup ever dreamed of having. I’ve got 2 rings in the very back, 4 rings where the back seats used to be and 8 studs where the middle seats used to be and my toolbox is bolted now. The cargo height isn’t that limited. I can fit my table saw in it on the stand. I don’t even own a 100 pound propane tank but how are you going to go about tying that down in a pickup bed standing up. Everything in a pickup bed is is wet and very exposed to theft. A pickup toolbox is close to useless. You can’t reach anything. You can’t even buy a new pickup a notable amount smaller than a suburban. There’s plenty of smaller SUVs so the driving size is a moot point.

We can go back and forth all night, except that we both have better things to do. You have what you want, I have what I like. We both create jobs that way.
Both of my pickups have racks of 1" square tubing to protect the cab and going down each side of the bed giving me endless points to tie off on. I'm fortunate enough that theft isn't a problem here yet, and most of what I need fits in the back seat of the extended cab anyways. I could have gone in a different direction 30 years ago and may have needed a ton dump truck et.al.; but that ship sailed years ago so now it's a want, not a need. I'm buying a Colorado tomorrow which will suit my purposes best; not overly bad on mileage for those frequent 400 mile round trips to visit my mother, small and light enough to sneak up a lot of old roads which my company Silverado won't fit; and about 9K less than a similarly equipped full sized pickup.

I didn't say that. I said a half ton regular bed truck was almost as useless as the Cadillac "truck".

Depends on your needs/usage. I don't find the 6.5' bed on my half ton truck useless at all, in fact I use it all the time to do truck stuff... hauling lumber, hauling trash to the dump, hauling mulch, hauling motorcycles and camping gear, etc. It also does a great job of towing my two single axle trailers (one open, one enclosed), which are well within it's towing capacity.

Might not meet YOUR needs, but it is anything but useless to me.

And to keep the thread semi on topic, here is my non-useless half-ton truck hauling a load that is properly secured with 4 ratchet straps to each bike, each strap rated at 1000 lb WLL.
